Tomato production in France fell slightly at the end of the season, leading to a drop in prices.

According to a forecast published on November 1, 2025, fresh tomato production in France in 2025 will amount to 497,600 tons, down 11,100 tons (-2%) from 2024. In October 2025, tomato prices fell by 24% compared to the same period in 2024 and by 19% compared to the average price for the same period in 2020-2024, indicating weak demand. The data above are taken from the French Ministry of Agriculture’s Economic Prospects report.
Greenhouse production has declined year-over-year. Greenhouse acreage for the fresh produce market is projected to decrease slightly (-1%) in 2025 compared to the previous year, to 2,758 hectares (but 2% above the 2020–2024 average). Production in France is projected at 497,600 tonnes, down 2% from 2024. The most significant declines are expected in the Midwest and West (down 6% from 2024). On the other hand, production in the Southwest Basin increased (+7%) due to higher yields per unit area.
“The decline in national production was driven by a decline in greenhouse production (down 3% year-on-year), but an increase in open field production (up 2% year-on-year) with higher yields per unit area, which somewhat offset the impact of the decline in greenhouse production.”
According to Agrest, “production in France has fallen sharply since September, but supply remains sufficient.”
Prices at the end of the season were lower than in previous years. “Trade slowed in September, with both demand and supply declining. Prices followed suit, particularly for berries (down 15% year-on-year and 19% compared to the average price for the same period in 2020-2024), largely due to strong competition from Moroccan produce. The berry market was relatively balanced. The berry market improved somewhat in October, but remained weak (down 30% year-on-year and 24% compared to the average price for the same period in 2020-2024), despite still significant sales volumes, indicating weak consumer activity.”
In January-September 2025, compared to the same period of the previous marketing year, tomato exports (199.4 thousand tons, including a large volume of re-exports) decreased by 12%, while imports (388.8 thousand tons) decreased by 8%. Over the same period, the trade balance deficit by volume (189.4 thousand tons) decreased by 4% compared to the same period of the previous year.
