China has launched a nationwide campaign to crack down on the misuse of food additives at all stages of the supply chain, from farm to table, according to a new plan released by the State Council Food Safety Commission.
The plan calls for stronger regulation of the production and sale of food additives, as well as increased oversight of their use in the food industry and catering. Authorities will focus on combating illegal activities, such as the substitution of approved food additives with chemicals.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has been called upon to take measures to prevent the use of prohibited agricultural materials in food production. At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will strengthen oversight of industrial materials that could be misused in the food industry.
The plan states that the Department of Health’s task is to improve the dynamic system for managing food additive categories to ensure that emerging issues and risks are appropriately addressed. Furthermore, market regulators must also strengthen oversight and investigate cases of food additive abuse.
