Unrivaled Local Advantages in Orange Cultivation

As one of the world’s native lands for sweet oranges, China boasts unique natural endowments that make it a powerhouse in orange cultivation. Chongqing, in particular, has carved out a leading position in the nation’s orange juice industry. With a citrus planting area spanning 3.835 million mu (about 255,667 hectares), the region boasts a diverse array of early, mid, and late-maturing sweet orange varieties. This ensures a steady, year-round supply of high-quality raw materials for orange juice production, laying a solid foundation for the industry’s growth.

Regions like Zhongxian County in Chongqing are further elevating the sector by building a fully integrated industrial chain. By the end of 2024, Zhongxian’s citrus orchards covered 365,000 mu, yielding 500,000 tons of oranges and generating a total output value of 6.5 billion yuan. Looking ahead, the county aims to expand its annual orange juice processing capacity from 120,000 tons to over 200,000 tons by the end of 2026, with the annual output value of orange juice processing set to surpass 2 billion yuan. These local strengths are propelling China’s orange juice industry to new heights.

Expanding Production Capacity to Meet Surging Demand

In recent years, China’s orange juice production capacity has been expanding at an impressive pace. Chongqing alone is home to 12 citrus juice processing plants, including 7 large-scale enterprises, with an annual processing capacity of 1.52 million tons, leading the nation in production scale. While there is still a gap between raw material supply and processing capacity, industry players are actively exploring solutions to bridge this divide, such as optimizing cultivation techniques and expanding planting areas.

Industry forecasts suggest that China’s orange juice production will maintain steady growth in the coming years, reaching 32,580 tons by 2030. Concurrently, advancements in processing technology are elevating the quality of Chinese orange juice, enabling it to meet the diverse demands of consumers. Notably, the non-concentrated (NFC) orange juice segment is experiencing explosive growth, driven by consumers’ growing preference for fresh, minimally processed beverages that retain the natural flavor and nutrients of oranges.

Strong Sales Performance Dominating Domestic and Global Markets

China’s orange juice market has been on a steady growth trajectory. In 2023, the market size reached 120 billion yuan, marking a year-on-year increase of 10.5%. Orange juice holds a 28% share of China’s juice market, making it the best-selling juice category by a significant margin.

Convenience stores have emerged as a key distribution channel, accounting for 36.4% of the market in 2023, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.9% from 2024 to 2032. Online retail platforms are also playing an increasingly vital role, as manufacturers leverage e-commerce to reach a broader consumer base and promote their products more effectively. On the global stage, China’s orange juice imports are expected to rise by 15,000 tons to 64,000 tons in the 2025/26 season, a clear indication of the strong domestic demand for orange juice.

A Nutritious Beverage Packed with Vitamin C

Beyond its economic prowess, orange juice is celebrated for its exceptional nutritional value, particularly as a rich source of vitamin C. A single eight-ounce glass of pure orange juice provides the full daily recommended intake of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from sun damage and shields the brain from harmful environmental pollutants.

For teenagers, the vitamin C in orange juice supports growth and development, boosts the immune system, and enhances iron absorption, reducing the risk of anemia. The natural sugars in orange juice offer a quick, energy-boosting alternative to sugary drinks, making it an ideal choice for people of all ages. Nutritionists recommend opting for freshly squeezed or 100% pure orange juice without added sugars to fully reap these health benefits.
